Indie - Crossbreed, Bitch ( 1 Year) - Page 2 Empty WHY OH WHY

Post  Janet Sun Oct 30, 2011 5:08 am

So sad that Angie & Leo hav been returned to kennels. So sad that one minute they are enjoying a wonderful home life & freedom only to be returned back to kennel life.Surely when you are going to adopt a dog you consider size, strenth the nature of the dog to suit your life style. It is such a shame that a few months down the road people decide "THIS IS NOT THE DOG FOR ME" I feel so sorry for these dogs because they suffer the most & they dont deserve it.I have had two rescue dogs & when i hit a hurdle i worked on it because i loved them & would never give up on them,i had them both for 15yrs. Sad Sad

Great news for Angie, but bad news for Blaze.

The beautiful girl is now rehomed without having to go back to kennels. If only the same could be said for Leo. Sad Sad

Hello Janet, I agree with you. I was taking away the food bowls after the dogs had eaten. Leo's Bowl was untouched. He must be so sad. It makes me want to cry.

What we need is PLANET OF THE DOGS then they can treat humans how we treated them.It is so heart breaking that a lot of humans have total disregard for animals.Must be hard for you Lala to see it close up & personal.

Amber (Abi/Angie) is doing really well with her new friend Honey (Springer Spaniel). There were some early issues with a nervous response to some men - barking and growling - but she seems to have mostly got over those with the aid of treats and her ball. She is definitely not a cold weather dog and spends a lot of time working out how to get maximum benefit from the fire to the extent that at dinner time she keeps popping back to reheat herself (my house is not cold!).
Amber and Honey have both just spent 10 days on enforced rest, Amber after having been spayed and Honey after having a lump removed from her back and today was their first long walk after that - so Honey jumped in a swamp (that i didnt realise existed until she found it) and Amber got herself stuck on the wrong side of a stream!! The pair of them get on like a house on fire and have been a predictable bad influence on each other. Honey's taught Amber how much fun can be found in the depths of bushes and Amber's taught Honey how to eat everything revolting in a wood (the one bad habit she hadn't yet mastered!).
A massive thank you to Forest Dog Rescue for introducing me to Amber, she's absolutely brilliant - Honey thinks so as well!!!

I am so very pleased to see how well she has settled in. I am still confused over her initial dislike of men, although to be fair, that is the one thing I cannot assess for in a home environment (I am single lol) but she was find with men here, so I can only assume it will be a short term thing. It really sounds like you are keeping her inline and continuing with her training

Thank you for giving her a lovely home...

One more thing .... any pics of the happy couple?

Amber is continuing to prove an excellent addition. She is incredibly polite at doors, which makes a pleasant change from a spaniel who is desperate to see what has changed in the 30 seconds since she last went through!
Amber and I are having quality time this week as unfortunately the wound from Honeys lump removal has split open and become infected; she has gone to my parents for some quiet convalescence as despite repeated trips to the vets it has not healed. Amber, with the best of intentions obviously, has been licking it every night which hasn't helped the healing process. Amber is definitely missing Honey but we have been taking advantage of the temporary absence of little miss "every toy in the world belongs to me" to play without toys all being hidden.
I've come to realise that my main role in life is to ensure that the heater is constantly switched on. The last trip outside in the evening us not a popular one! She despises the rain with a passion - the offended look on her face when she gets outside and realises she might get wet is hilarious.
I think the initial bad reaction to men was largely down to being a lot more used to women. She's now worked out what an incredibly soft touch most men are and employs the sad eyes technique to good effect. She's very popular at work and behaves incredibly well in the office with regular trips outside for a quick play. Honey generally sits under the desk staring at her own shadow (springer thing) and Amber sits next to it ready to say hello to people who may walk in (if she could stop inappropriate sniffing she would be even better!!)
We're going to be starting socialisation and agility classes soon as she is so desperate to play with every dog she sees that she gets very frustrated at times. She is brilliant with other dogs - nit a hint of aggression and if I was confident that every dog she is likely to meet would be friendly it wouldn't be a problem.
She's put some muscle on because of the exercise she's getting but is still super skinny - the vet says its down to the whippet/greyhound in her as despite my attempts to feed her up she hasn't put any weight on at all.
She's awesome!!

Post  Julie Fri Dec 02, 2011 7:53 pm

what a beautiful post - you are right Amber is totally awesome - I have her photo in my hall and whenever I look at it I just have to have a little smile. When I took her from the kennels into foster, all of the people who had some input in her day to day care knew she was a special girl, and when she stayed here I had the same feeling. I am so incredibly glad that you have her now and that I know she will continue to thrive... she is amazing that is for sure.

Well done and a big thank you for all of the love you share with her

(I popped back on and edited Angie to Amber - sorry, old habits die hard lol)

Indie - Crossbreed, Bitch ( 1 Year) - Page 2 Empty What a fantastic update

Post  Ria Fri Dec 02, 2011 8:50 pm

I'm just so pleased to hear about Amber's progress, not least because it dispels all the crap lies we had about her when she was returned by her previous adopter. Sorry to be so blunt, but we knew it was a crock of doggy doo and what was actually wrong was the people, not the dog!!

Jules' rehabilitation of Amber set her up to be a wonderful dog, and it's so heart warming to see that in the right hands she is flourishing so beautifully.

Well done to you all for adopting Amber and giving her the opportunity to settle in such a loving forever home. Hope Honey gets well soon. Keep up the progress reports, and I hope we can see some photos when Amber and Honey are reunited.

Indie - Crossbreed, Bitch ( 1 Year) - Page 2 Empty Amber's Christmas!

Post  Miel Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:16 am

Amber, Honey and I have just spent two weeks in North Wales for Christmas with a real log fire for Amber to sit and stare at! She has had two walks a day on the beach as well as walks up some hills and mountains. She is definitely coming round to realising that all water is not evil and will happily run into the sea up to the middle of her legs (but only if she thinks it's worth it! - seagulls!!). She has calmed down a lot when meeting other dogs and will politely go and touch noses before following me and doesn't try to play with everything she sees. She has an absolutely brilliant temperament, I've never seen an aggressive or negative reaction - even when another dog (luckily on a lead) started snarling and lunging, she just gave him a confused look and moved on. She even met a chihuahua, which seemed to perplex her quite a lot! She's also proven to be very very good with the 10 week old labrador puppy we've been staying with. She plays with him very gently and patiently and I haven't once heard a yelp come from his direction (unlike Honey, the little toad, who doesn't like him and growls whenever he comes near). Amber was absolutely obsessed with the puppy initially, getting very concerned when he whimpered, sitting by his crate, looking at me and whining to make sure I knew he was there (obviously that didn't stop her stealing his toys).

She's also met quite a few children of varying ages over Christmas and proven to be very lovely and sweet. She will quite happily lie down and accept the attention that she thinks is her due all day if allowed. She still doesn't like the idea of bad weather, although she's quite happy once outside - the wind was howling this morning and she took A LOT of encouragement to leave her bed. She's got even fitter over Christmas, although it's very funny to see her stood by a path, staring off into the woods in the direction that Honey was last seen, with a resigned "I suppose I'm going to have to follow her again" expression. It's quite nice to have a dog that actually walks with you some of the time (Honey runs loops around you in the undergrowth in a very typical springer way). She is definitely not sheep friendly, which is typical of lurchers apparently, as we had a very near miss when she was off a lead (one poor lost sheep on a mountaintop which shouldn't have been there).

Recall is good and steadily improving with the notable exception of when she found a rotting dead fish and had to have the entire thing pulled out of her mouth (when we got to her she just had the tail sticking out - she somehow wasn't choking but clearly thought her best chance of getting to eat it was to swallow it whole).

Amber and Honey now seem to be very fond of each other, it's quite sweet watching them. Honey always cleans Amber off after a walk and Amber always backs Honey up when she's barking at something irrational (swans, a funny shaped tree, a garden gnome etc) even if she has no idea why she is barking.

I've ordered a doggy DNA test for Amber as I get asked so often what she is (I can't make my mind up what I think!). A lady we met on a walk the other day was very excitied as she thought she looked like her dog which was a mastiff x collie. They did look similar but Amber definite has some sort of sighthound in there somewhere! It will also give me a better idea how much I need to try and feed her up if I have some idea of breeds. The vet said she was fine but she just looks so skinny - I do manage to get weight on her but then she goes and runs it off - you almost see her shedding pounds when she sprints!

I will attempt to post some pictures (it's very difficult to get non blurred action shots!).

What a lovely write up - thank you for taking the time to write so much about a wonderful young girl (and not forgetting Honey and the dead fish - I so wish I had seen that).

The foster dog I have here at the moment reminds me so much of Amber - very bright and keen to please but ultimately still a young dog in so many ways. You have really worked wonders with her.

We are trying to increase the topics here on the forum - if you have any helpful tips or useful snippets of info that you would like to share please feel free to add to or start your own topics. Ideally we would love to see the new owners all helping and supporting each other - often you are the one looking for help one day and then the helper the next. It doesn't matter if you cut and paste bits of your original posts either.

Thank you so much for the stories - you should write a book.

Amber has been returned to rescue through no fault of her own. As I have said many times, she is a fantastic dog who has settled so well. Unfortunately since shortly after new year Honey has started behaving very aggressively towards her and despite my best efforts, and I've tried every thing I can think of as well as consulted the vet, it's got worse and worse. I drove past the kennels 3 times before I could bring myself to take her in. I went through every possible option but I couldn't find any way of keeping her that would ensure the health and welfare of both dogs.

Amber has been the model of good behaviour and has not reacted to Honey's aggression - trying to back off but it isn't fair to put a dog in that situation. So far I've managed to contain the problem by removing Honey from the room but it was very obvious that it was a matter of time before one or other dog got hurt. I'll put myself through anything for my dogs but I couldn't stand it if one of them got injured because I put them in a situation that allowed it to happen.

I grew up with dogs and we've always had bitches with generally hardly any problems but I've twice seen it where one has taken against another and in both cases it's resulted in injuries to the "innocent party."

The only explanation I've been able to come up with is some sort of lasting effect of Honeys surgery in November. The vet basically bodged the operation and removed far too much skin from her back, the wound burst and she's been left with very tight skin across her back and a scar that she still can't tolerate having touched - there's nothing further the vet can do aside from give me cream for the scar. She also had severe gastroenteritis after the operation causing internal bleeding (caught at the same vets) and lost a lot of weight. I did think she'd recovered, especially with how much fun we all had together over Christmas and new year but looking at her now, she's not the same dog she used to be.

To any potential adopters out there: Amber is an amazing dog and I'm devastated to have to give her up. I have given FDR three pages of notes on her that will hopefully explain this a bit more as well as my earlier posts which sing her praises. Nothing has changed about her - but she needs a home where she is safe. FDR have my number if anyone is considering taking her home and wants anymore info. All Amber needs is love, lots of exercise, good quality food and consistency. A log fire would be a real bonus for her as well.

Oh Amber - the photo Nina took of you in the green grass with little yellow flowers behind you adorns my whiteboard above my desk - I often gaze at those lovely eyes and remind myself what a wonderful foster dog you were.... How sad to see you back at kennels.

Miel, what a terrible decision - I have had to make a similar decision in the past and I know exactly how hard that decision is to make - but I feel it is a selfless one if things are that bad at home.

Indie - Crossbreed, Bitch ( 1 Year) - Page 2 Empty DNA Analysis

Post  Miel Wed Feb 01, 2012 5:16 am

I've had the results of Amber's DNA analysis back. She is apparently 50% American Bulldog, 25% Labrador and 25% GSD. I have to confess to being a little sceptical simply because of her speed but having said that I can see certain GSD traits in there and I googled American Bulldog - never having met one and there is a certain facial resemblance. Not completely convinced! Having said that I will post the info pack to FDR when it arrives as it may be of use.

So sad that it did not work out for Amber, it must have been incredibly difficult for you to bring her back as she is a lovely dog. I am sure though that she will find her new home soon.

Jules, I have always loved that pic of her with the yellow flowers in the background too, it is lovely. I am not sure who took it, but it was most definitely not me. xx

Post  Nina Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:50 am

I walked Amber the other day and she was such a fun dog to be with. I decided to take her as she was eagerly watching me from behind the bars of her kennel, whilst I was ticking off the dogs I already walked on the board. When I say eagerly, I mean she watched my every single move! Very Happy wag wag wag

I let her out to the back of the kennel and she was happily waiting there for me greeting me in an excited but well mannered way on my approach. She was very patient and helpful, whilst I struggled to make the collar the right size for her and then we were finally off. She walked well and was happy to be out and about.

After the walk we snapped up the big play area before anybody else could get in and enjoyed a game of ball. She was great, I would throw the ball and she would run after it, at the speed of light dog dog dog dog dog dog , and catch it. Once the ball was hers she would bring it to me a drop it by my feet. What a good dog! dog walk dog walk dog walk

Amber really enjoyed our time out and seemed satisfied upon her return to the kennel. However, a kennel is no place for her. She should be living with an active family who could run and play ball with her and provide her with a comfy warm bed placed in a strategic position, such as right before the fireplace, by the bed so that she can ensure you wake up on time in the mornings or even better, somewhere where she can supervise any activities related to food preparation. lol! lol! lol!

I really hope this girl finds her forever home soon, she has had her share of misfortune and is now due for some seriously good luck! Please, come and see her soon!!! You will get a lovely forever friend pup pup pup pup pup.
