Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty To bootcamp we will go.....

Post  Ria Sun Mar 04, 2012 3:26 am

Just about to dash out but thought I would let everyone know that Debbie, the FDR Manager, and Alison and Mary, the trustees, agree that Tucker should go to Kate, initially for a couple of weeks, for intensive rehabilitation. She will work specifically on the separation anxiety and crate training. He will be reviewed after two weeks and then, depending on his progress, a decision will be taken on whether he needs a bit more training, or whether he can come back to me on foster with support from Kate until he is ready to be rehomed. There is a third option, which I'm not going to mention, because it will not have to be considered, such is my faith in Tucker and Kate.

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty Tucker has left the building ....

Post  Ria Tue Mar 06, 2012 1:47 am

Kate has just picked Tucker up for stage one of his rehabilitation programme! If all goes well, he will be coming back to me on Saturday for training reinforcement. Hopefully we will see how Kate gets on with him day by day. An added bonus is that she will train him to use the treadmill, which I have failed with so far.

Fingers crossed everyone!!

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty TUCKER COMES TO STAY

Post  paganspirit Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:15 am

As you all know, I collected Tucker at lunchtime today. Ria had packed his picnic lunches, his favourite toys and his new short lead, so luggage ready, we were off!!

We walked over to the temporary car park where my twins were waiting patiently in the car to see what surprise I had in store for them....Tucker was a bit stunned at the boys, but we loaded his bag into the car and then he hopped into his side of the cage.

He tried a spin but I was expecting it and interrupted him before we got going. Our first stop was to exercise 2 veteran rescue dogs, Tucker and the twins waited in the car. Although Tucker seemed more interested in coming for a walk he waited expectantly for me to finish and take him on to our next stop.

Next stop was a quick lunch and toilet break at my house for the 3 dogs in the car and the 4 who had worked this morning, but no rest for the wicked and we were off again to another pack. Again, Tucker and the twins waited in the car for 20 minutes while I took another couple of dogs for a quick run. We had a bit of "staffie chatting" but no real noise and no spinning.

Then came some fun for Tucker - a power walk! The twins and I showed him one of our short routes around Ludlow out across the Burway and round the back of the football ground. We came back across Tesco car park and said a quick (and for Tucker - non bouncy) hello to several people.

Then - 6:30pm, home again one more toilet break and then the big test, fitting in with the pack. Tucker has a private space (crate)set up in the living room and my deaf collie cross lives in there too. The other dogs are allowed in when invited but this is the area where training is concentrated. We have spent most of the evening working on the crate training and Tucker has been a star - no spinning, no noise, settling on command and staying there with the door open even when we have been busy sorting the other dogs in the kitchen.

As I type he is snoring happily in his bed, a very relaxed and happy dog.

My OH thinks this is some sort of a fix to adopt him as he hasn't seen any problems with him so far......Tucker kept all 4 feet on the ground and showed off his perfect manners when meeting the OH and the children and has been no problem at all with any command he has been given........

the saga will continue tomorrow xx

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty The boy done good!

Post  Ria Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:57 am

Well done Tucker (and Kate). Sounds like he's had the perfect induction. Mind you, I can just imagine that he's in complete shock of going from a quiet environment with just one mardy little madam terrier to a full pack, and he's keeping a low profile while his little bully (as in bullbreed, not thug!) brain tries to make sense of how one minute he's sleeping in his favourite spot at work, to suddenly being snatched from his comfort zone!!

Your comment about your OH's suspicions made me laugh. Then I thought, well even Cesar Milan had his Daddy and now Junior to showcase the bullbreed and prove that it is the human, not the breed, that has given the pitbull such a bad reputation. I think Tucker could be your perfect example of how to turn an unchallenged, rejected, and abandoned specimen into the perfect pack member. You'll be telling me next that you've moved on from the power walk and whipped out the skates and he's pulled you round Ludlow. Keep up the brilliant work Kate!

We took full advantage of his absence by shooting off to Hereford straight from work and taking our time shopping, without worrying whether we'd have a car to go back to! Have to admit though that I'm missing my foot warmer tonight, and Phoebe is rather surprised that she can fully stretch out on the sofa!

Night, night Tucker! Enjoy your first sleep, and be a good boy tomorrow!

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty The boy continues to flourish

Post  Ria Sat Mar 10, 2012 3:38 am

Just had a long conversation with Kate, and she is going to keep Tucker until next weekend to continue with his rehabilitation. He is coming along really well, and I will be popping up to the kennels tomorrow to have a little look at the boy as he will be accompanying Kate while she trains another dog.

On the one hand I'm a bit deflated because we were really looking forward to having him back tomorrow, but on the other I know he has to have whatever is best for his future rehoming prospects. I am just so thrilled that Kate has the same faith in Tucker that I have and knows how vital it is to make sure that we undo all the crap this poor lad has had put into him in his former life.

Way to go, Tucker!!

joy jump

I've got half a bull's leg taking up my fridge at the moment! I will give it to Baz's mum tomorrow for the Bazzy boy, as I wouldn't want Tucker's pack getting envious. What a weekend - walk with Baz in the morning, then Tucker and the kennel dogs in the afternoon!

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty Lovely to see my boy!

Post  Ria Sun Mar 11, 2012 10:25 am

What a treat - pulling up at the kennels this afternoon, there was Tucker alongside Kate, showing everyone what a good boy he was. Well, what a fantastic welcome I got from him - okay, I spoiled the moment of utter good behaviour, but it was so wonderful to see him and get such a mad thumping little stump of a tail, and an utter face wash. I was so pleased to see him, and I think the feeling was reciprocated. Tucker was so good. There were so many distractions, but he stood up to them and behaved really well.

Until next week, I'll count down the days until he's with us again!

It's so wonderful to hear how well Tucker is doing. I know you're missing him, Ria, but it won't be long before he's back and you'll have the joy of his company without the fear of the upsetting and destructive behaviour. He's had a bad start in life, but you haven't let that define him, I'm so glad that your patience and tenacity are being rewarded. Very Happy

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty We're getting the bunting ready..

Post  Ria Sat Mar 17, 2012 11:54 pm

we have the balloons up - no, I lie. They are the balloons for Strutt and Parker, our estate agent, to show people we are part of the open day for house viewings, and I am sitting here patiently waiting for the 3pm bell that lets me shut the gate, and phone Kate to see when Tucker's coming back!

I am very excited. His marrowbone awaits him, his cushions are plumped up, and his crate is ready to be put up. I am hoping we get him back in time to give him a good walk with Phoebe. Tomorrow is set aside for a day at home following Kate's instructions.

Fingers crossed everyone! Watch this space. Jo, hope to see you on Monday on the burgage at lunchtime with my boy! dog dog dog

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty Honey, I'm home!!

Post  Ria Sun Mar 18, 2012 12:02 pm

Tucker came back with a flourish!! Pulling so hard to get in, he was up on his back two legs, almost choking himself on his training collar. Not quite the entrance Kate envisaged, but hey! I bet after two weeks away, nothing was going to stop the boy from getting overly excited. He came with a set of strict instructions and a new set of vocab. MANNERS. SETTLE. FIND IT. FETCH IT. GO DO SOMETHING ELSE. We already use WAIT, HEEL, OFF YOU GO, BED, so at least we didn't have to have to learn too many new words!

Now here was the killer instruction:

Feeding:

After preparing Tucker's meal, place his bowl in the feeding spot and ask him to return to his crate. Once he is settled and completely calm, he should be invited to walk past his meal to the other side of the room to receive permission to eat. At no time should his attention be on the food.

I must admit I almost laughed out loud at that one. "No chance! You've gotta be kidding!!" were a couple of thoughts going through my mind. The first thing I did was instruct him to settle on his bed in the kitchen while I fed Phoebe. Not a flicker of interest in her food. Wow!! After Phoebe had eaten, he got up to go inspect her bowl, and I quickly gave him an instruction. "Bed! Settle!" and he did. Fabulous!! So the next stage was his grub. Bowl filled, I set it down two feet away and told him to settle. He looked at it, and I reinforced settle. His eyes came away and I walked to the other side of the kitchen. After 30 seconds I asked him to come to me and sit down next to me. He did. Straight past his food!! Once he was completely settled, I said "Go on, have your dinner" and he trotted over to his bowl and calmly ate his dinner. Well, I'm sure the exchange of looks Phil and I gave eachother must have been a picture, and we quietly exchanged a couple of expletives too!

It's not all been plain sailing, and he has tested us a couple of times during the evening, but on the whole he gives you a look that says, "I do know what I'm supposed to do, but I was just testing you!" and has settled.

His regime is very strict. No sofa, no bed (our bed, not his), no upstairs, no indoor play with Phoebe, all walks on a longline free walk, but only after at least ten minutes on a walk to heel on a loose lead. Lots of instructions on how he is to enter the car, approach people, play, etc. It seems very harsh, when all I really want to do is give him a great big cuddle and tell him how wonderful he is and snuggle up with him on the sofa. I have to detach myself and remember that there is a reason we are doing this. Without this regime he will quickly slip back and take advantage. It needs to be enforced until it becomes habit, and that could take 3-6 months. His new owners will have to keep it up, and for that reason there has to be a strict list of criteria that his new owners must meet. They have to be bullbreed savvy, they must be willing to continue his training, there can be no children, they must have liaibilty insurance for him, they can't leave him regularly. It sounds a big ask, but there is a home out there for him. We just need to find it. My thoughts are that if we can maintain this regime and not faulter, then it will be less of a burden for his adopters. The stronger we are with him, the better his chances of success. It is hard. He looks at me and inside I melt. I love this boy to the very bones of his body. However, I have to be strong. I have to think of the greater good and his long term prospects. I have to remember that I am applying my own emotions to how I think he is feeling, which is ridiculous.

So, tomorrow we will do some more reinforcement. Off to the forest. In the meantime his bed, in the crate, awaits. Fingers crossed everyone!

Tucker - Staffie, Dog (2 Years) FOSTERED IN TENBURY WELLS - Page 4 Empty Good Night's Rest

Post  Ria Sun Mar 18, 2012 8:29 pm

Getting Up:

enter the room, open the crate door (insisting Tucker remains inside). When Tucker is completely relaxed he may be given permission to come out of the crate to a designated rest spot, e.g. a mat or a blanket. KEY WORDS: BED & SETTLE

I'd give myself an 8 out of 10. I say myself, because I have to take responsibility for Tucker's mistakes. I know what I did wrong. I slid the locks across a millisecond before I said wait and he pushed out of the crate past me. Easily remedied I thought, but he did a quick lap of the kitchen and shot upstairs to the bedroom (at which point I could hear Phil yelling, above my yells, to get out), before he finally came back and went back in his crate and we started again. Second time it went much better as I then made him wait an extra few seconds before telling him he could come out onto his bed. When I was happy he was calm, I then gave him his greeting and a good old staffie scratch on his back. Again, I think it's my own selfishness that wants to encourage his initial raptures of excitement of seeing me (who doesn't love the unconditional adoration that a dog gives you when he sees you?), and I have to keep thinking that this is a dog that goes from zero to 100 on the excitement scale in the blink of an eye, and he has to learn self control. This is tough, but it's teaching me self control too! Laughing Laughing Laughing

We then went outside for number ones and twos, making sure that he controlled himself at the exit door until he was given permission to go out. All of these things take thought and time, and it's made me realise how quickly you can just let things go to save a few seconds. This coming week will definitely be about planning and giving myself extra time to make sure we get it right.

After we did a few entrances and exits in a controlled manner, we had a play with the ball in the garden. I must ask Kate what it was that she actually did to train him to leave the ball for me to throw again. I have never had a tougher case than Tucker to train, and I honestly thought he was going to be forever one of those dogs that you have to play two ball fetch with when you were short of time. In the past I had gone from him never giving up the ball, to him bringing it back, dropping it, then snatching it up as you went to pick it up. It would be the third or fourth attempt before you could actually get him to leave the ball and each time he would go tripping off with the ball for a lap of honour before bringing it back. If you were short of time you would end up playing two ball fetch, being sure to launch the second ball as he was legging it towards you and getting the timing just right so that he would drop the ball six feet before he got to you, and it would roll the final six feet as he was dashing away in pursuit of the second ball. This morning I launched the ball, he did his beautiful fast run down the garden, racing through the air with front and back legs horizontal to his little body, caught the ball, brought it back and dropped it at my feet. A fluke, I thought, so we did it again and again and again. Top marks Tucker (and Kate of course)!

We came back into the house and I dried him off and we had a little rest on his bed before we went into the kitchen for the breakfast routine. Again, he was most respectful as I fed Phoebe first. I then prepared his breakfast and put it down and told him to wait in his bed. I actually then left the kitchen and went into the utility room to prepare my two outside feral cats' breakfast (changing the subject slightly, I did ask both house viewers yesterday if they were willing to continue feeding the cats if they bought the house and they both said most definitely, so there are lots of good people in the world!), giving him an occasional wait command from afar. I went back into the kitchen and on sight of me he obviously thought it was the permission he needed to dash for his breakfast, so a very sharp leave it and bed command and he (very) grudgingly returned to his bed. At this point his staffie whingeing got the better of him and he was very fixated by the food, so it took him a good few minutes to settle down and look at me rather than keep glancing over at his food. I then walked around to the other side of the kitchen and called him over. He tried to go via his food bowl, so I decided we had lost the moment completely, so I lifted his food, distracted him completely by taking him into the lounge and making him settle on his bed for ten minutes and then started the whole process again. He was better the second time, although when I called him over he did walk past his bowl without glancing at it, but while he was waiting alongside me he was obviously distracted by the food and it took a good couple of minutes before he had calmed down and I let him eat. I wish there was 25 hours in the day this week!

I am extremely sensitive to Kate's thoughts that he is going to test me because he will remember his past behaviour while he was with me before (and it was one of the things that she was worried about with him coming back to me rather than going straight to a forever home). However, it's not a perfect world and it was very much a catch 22 situation of him finding a forever home before he was in a state to be rehomed, so we have to make the best of the situation. If he fails this week, it's down to me. He has had the best foundation, now he's had a change of environment and back to previous familiarity, I have to make sure that I'm on top of him the whole time. I feel quite horrible not giving him any leeway at the moment but I have to keep reminding myself that I am rehabilitating him so that his new forever home is exactly that - forever.

So far, so good. Onwards and upwards.

Absolutely brilliant news Ria & Phil - Tucker has improved so much! And remember, you're not being harsh by not allowing him on the sofa/upstairs/bed & making him wait (if that's classed as being harsh, then we're definately the harshest owners going!!!) you're taking little leaps towards Tuck's forever home and then you can begin the next cycle with another foster dog Very Happy

Now come on Jackie, I can fully understand why you don't want to let Nico on the sofa or on the bed! Tucker is a nice little compact heat parcel that tucks up nicely behind your legs and radiates a lovely warmth on a chilly night. Nico would flatten you and there definitely wouldn't be room on the sofa for two. lol!

Haha! Nico thinks he's a Yorkshire terrier trapped in a Ridgeback's body! He's convinced he's a lapdog and won't be persuaded otherwise. Lovely furry hotwater bottle for feet, though Very Happy

And on another note, I've just realised that Tucker looks so much like my uncle's staffie, it's like they were separated at birth! Hope Tucker continues to dazzle with his new manners Smile
